Required Textbook: McDougal Littell Middle School Math: Course 3
COURSE OBJECTIve
This year there will be a focus on the standards for mathematical practices. Students will be expected to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, reason abstractly and quantitatively, construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others, model with mathematics, use
appropriate tools strategically, attend to precision, look for and make use of structure, and to look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning. Students are expected to demonstrate their knowledge through homework, class work, quizzes, tests, and projects.
At the end of the course, students will be able to develop the following:
1. Higher level thinking and processing skills
2. Organizational and note taking skills
3. Problem solving skills using applicable concepts
5. Self and peer assessment
Required Materials:
· 3 prong pocket folder w/ filler paper
· 1 Composition Notebook
· Pencil/Eraser/ color pencils or pens
· Hand Sanitizer (recommended)
Classroom Rules:
· Be on time
· Come to class prepared to learn
· Respect others’, their property, and their opinions
· Be organized, write legibly
· No eating or drinking in class
· No cell phones, I-pods, or other electronic devices are to be used in class* (unless required for lesson)
· Enjoy Learning!
Consequences:
1st OFFENSE: Verbal Warning
2nd OFFENSE: Lunch Detention (15 minutes)
3rd OFFENSE: Lunch Detention plus Call to Parents and/ or parent conference
4th OFFENSE: Call to parents and Referral to Counselor
5th OFFENSE: Referral to Discipline Office
*Cell phone use is allowed ONLY as permitted by school policy, see Untalan School Handbook
POLICIES:
Student attendance:
Daily attendance is required. If a student is absent, s/he must submit an excuse note signed by parent or guardian. Absences will be acknowledged and accepted depending on the situation and must comply with board and school policy to be considered “Excused”.
Tardiness:
Students are considered “Tardy” once the second bell/ tardy bell has rung and s/he is not in the classroom and ready to learn. If tardiness becomes habitual (3 or more unexcused), student will adhere to the following consequences:
1st OFFENSE: Verbal Warning
2nd OFFENSE: Lunch Detention (15 minutes)
3rd OFFENSE: Lunch Detention plus Call to Parents and/or parent conference
4th OFFENSE: Call to parents and Discipline Office
5th OFFENSE: Referral to Discipline Office/Truant Officer
Any truancy concerns will be escalated to the proper administrators and/ or officials to be looked into as detailed in school policy and/ or GDOE Board Policy.
Class work and Homework: Class work and Homework must be completed in pencil and MUST be neat and legible in order for it to be graded. Student must also show their work to receive full credit for a problem. Grading rubrics may be used from time to time and will be discussed in class and sent home for student/ parent reference.
Quiz/Test Policy: Quizzes and tests will be given periodically. Students will be given approximately one week notice for all quizzes and tests. However, pop quizzes may be given to check if students are retaining information learned and studying their notes on a regular basis.
Late assignments: If assignments are late for more than 2 days, a call will be placed home to inform parents or guardians of late assignments. Late assignments will be deducted points at the discretion of the teacher, not to exceed 50%. Assignments that are more than 3 days late will receive a 0%. Special arrangements MAY be discussed for late work with excused absences, at the discretion of the teacher. .
Annual Assessment: A pre/post annual assessment will be given to measure incremental gains in skill attainment and to provide the district with a report of student achievement. The annual assessment is issued at the beginning of 1st Quarter and end of 4th Quarter. It is a standard exam format of multiple choice questions covering skills taught over four quarters.
Parent Communication: It is imperative that students, parents, and teachers maintain a regular and open line of communication for questions, comments, or concerns that may arise. I will be sending out an information sheet that will ask for your current and active phone number(s) and email address(es), if applicable. I will send out weekly emails to the parents and students for information, upcoming events, and/ or other pertinent class/ school announcements. You will also have access to our &B Team Tigers Webpage to keep abreast with current events. Please inform me via email or phone call if your contact information changes as I would like to always have regular communication with you.

Citizenship Grade:
Each student’s citizenship grade is evaluated based on the following rubrics:
E = Excellent
· Student exhibits exemplary behavior: no disciplinary actions needed
· Always follows school and classroom rules
· Listens politely and demonstrates respect to others
· Actively participates in class most of the time
· Socializes very well with others most of the time
S = Satisfactory
· Student exhibits good behavior; few to no disciplinary action needed
· Consistently follow school and classroom rules
· Participates in class
· Gets along well with others some of the time
N = Needs Improvement
· Students exhibits inappropriate behavior
· Inconsistently follows school and classroom rules
· Occasionally disciplinary action needed; teacher disciplinary action needed on three or more occasions
· Student participation in class is infrequent
· Has difficulty getting along with others
U = Unsatisfactory
· Student exhibits unacceptable behavior
· Frequent disciplinary actions needed; referred to the PPO and disciplinary action (Taken Level II or III type offenses)
· Students not participating in class
